Protocatechuic acid is a type of phenolic acid and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of more complex molecules, such as anthocyanin 3-O-β-D-glucoside. It is one of several isomers of dihydroxybenzoic acid. Protocatechuic acid is a major metabolite of antioxidant polyphenols in green tea and exhibits some inhibitory effects on tumor cells. It is widely found in commonly used Chinese herbal medicines, such as Eleutherococcus senticosus, Polygonum hydropiper, and Phyllanthus urinaria.

Protocatechuic acid can be used as a dye, a pharmaceutical intermediate, and an analytical reagent (for iron detection). It exhibits diverse biological activities targeting various molecular sites, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, protocatechuic acid has potential chemoprotective properties, as it can inhibit chemical carcinogens in vitro and promote apoptosis and antiproliferative effects in various aspects.

Protocatechuic acid is currently used in clinical treatments for burns, pediatric pneumonia, bacterial dysentery, acute pyelonephritis, acute pancreatitis, and certain ulcer diseases. It exhibits pharmacological activities such as inhibiting platelet aggregation, reducing myocardial oxygen consumption, enhancing myocardial oxygen tolerance, slowing heart rate, and showing antibacterial and analgesic effects. It also possesses antioxidant, antitumor, and neuroprotective properties.
Protocatechuic acid is also used as a raw material to produce drugs like Erlotinib. When combined with other substances, it can effectively shorten the healing time of diabetic foot ulcers.
